Castro de Castromaior is one of the most popular archaeological sites in the northwest of Spain. This castro was developed in the Iron Age. It was inhabited between the fourth centuries BC and first century AD by three different populations, until its abandonment with the first Roman approaches. The site covers an area of approximately 5 hectares.
Between 2006 and 2010 it was the centre of archaeological works in order to discover its entire structure. In 2010 it was given the title of Cultural Interest and is therefore preserved.
The Castro de Castromaior is located on an elevation to give its inhabitants great visibility to be prepared for enemy attacks. It consisted of a main enclosure, where homes were concentrated and different walled platforms located outside.
The Ruins are a small detour off the Camino de Santiago Frances and well worth the effort. It was early morning when we were there and the sun was still rising, so it felt quite surreal.
